Cluster Pays: how cluster slots pay without paylines

In a classic slot, wins are paid along paylines; in Megaways, they are paid by ways. But there is a third path: Cluster Pays, where groups of adjacent symbols pay out. This is the foundation of the cluster themes in our engine. Let’s break down the rule and why it pairs so well with cascades.

Cluster rule

In Cluster Pays, there are no paylines. A win is awarded when a group of identical symbols touches horizontally or vertically (not diagonally) and reaches a minimum size — typically 5 symbols.

The bigger the cluster, the higher the payout: the table grows in steps (5, 6, 7… symbols) all the way up to a full screen. The grid here is larger than the classic 5×3 — often 6×5 or 7×7.

Why clusters get along with cascades

After a win, the cluster symbols are removed and new ones fall from above (tumble/cascade). This can form a new cluster from the same spin — the chain continues as long as there are wins.

The bundle delivers long sequences in a single paid spin and a clear "snowball" effect. In our engine, the cascade is deterministic and provably-fair: the entire chain can be recalculated from the seeds.

Cluster vs lines and ways

Lines are fixed paths from left to right. Ways — any symbol on adjacent reels. Cluster — grid adjacency in all directions except diagonal, plus group size.

Clusters are visually more dynamic: a win appears as a "blot" on the screen, not an abstract line. Combined with cascades, this is one of the most engaging modern mechanics.

FAQ

How many symbols are needed to win in Cluster Pays?
Usually a minimum of 5 adjacent matching symbols; the larger the cluster, the higher the payout.
Is the diagonal counted in a cluster?
No. Symbols must touch horizontally or vertically — diagonal adjacency does not form a cluster.
